The accommodation programme for refugees in apartments was presented in Larissa, Central Greece, in a joint press conference held by the Greek Minister of Migration, Yannis Mouzalas, and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Representative in Greece, Philippe Leclerc, on Monday, April 10th. The President of the Union of Municipalities of Thessaly, Giorgos Kotsos, and the Mayor of Larissa, Apostolos Kalogiannis, also participated in the press conference that took place in the premises of the Union.
Describing the programme, Minister Mouzalas stressed that “It is a program that will be beneficial to the local society, it will bring dignity to the refugees and migrants, it guarantees peace in the municipalities and the integration of refugees and migrants,”
UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Representative in Greece, Philippe Leclerc, said that the UN programme for hosting refugees in apartments in Thessaly will be implemented with the agreement of municipalities and citizens. He added that the same program is being implemented in Athens, Thessaloniki and Livadia with very good results. “So far the program shows that people can live together in the best way. There was no problem in the coexistence between refugees and local communities,” he said.
Mr Leclerc informed the press that UNHCR discussed the issue with the representatives of the municipalities and the region of Thessaly, so that accommodation in apartments of people who fled war to find a normal peaceful life will be implemented without problems. He also explained that UNHCR is helping the municipalities that wish to be included in the program providing technical directives and other details so that it can also be implemented in Thessaly. Mr Leclerc finally noted that “UNHCR will help with the process of expansion of the refugee accommodation program in apartments so that refugees will improve their living conditions.”
