The accommodation programme for refugees in apartments was presented in Thessaloniki, Central Macedonia, in an event held by the President of the Union of Municipalities of Central Macedonia Region, Lazaros Kirizoglou, the Greek Minister of Migration, Yannis Mouzalas and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Representative in Greece, Philippe Leclerc, on Thursday, May 25th.
Minister Mouzalas, who invited the municipalities representatives to participate, and described the benefits of the accommodation programme. Mr. Mouzalas also noted that “there is nothing safer for local communities than the accommodation in apartments, where by now there have been zero troubles and tensions.”
“We encourage the accommodation of refugees in apartments where daily life becomes normal and conditions are humane”, said Mr. Philippe Leclerc, UNHCR Representative in Greece. Mr. Leclerc encouraged the participation in the programme that covers the cost of rent, furniture, utilities, transportation of beneficiaries etc.
“It is very important that Greece has built on its experience and we now have refugees residing in apartments and not in sites. We are confident that more municipalities will get involved in the program. Together we will act as quickly as possible to find the desired number of apartments which will allow us to transfer people from sites and eventually close them”, said Mr. Leclerc. He added that the same program is being implemented, with funding by the European Commission, in Athens, Thessaloniki, Livadia and Crete with very good results.
