Mounir Haba, 38, and his wife Aya Kahwaji, 29, live with their three children in Thessaloniki. Nine-year-old Ali and six-year-old Salima both attend 3rd Primary School of Kalamaria. The family’s younger member is one-year-old Liliana.
UNHCR in cooperation with the Greek Government, local authorities and NGO partners, provides urban accommodation and cash assistance to refugees and asylum-seekers in Greece through ESTIA. The programme allows beneficiaries access to services, while cash assistance restores dignity to those receiving it by allowing them to choose how to cover their daily needs.
By the end of December 2019, UNHCR had created more than 25,000 places in the accommodation scheme, including 500 places in apartments in Thessaloniki coordinated by INTERSOS.
