We wish Laila and her family health and wellbeing on what is today, 1 December, her 110th birthday. We are happy that Laila spends this day with members of her family in an apartment in Athens. The centenarian Syrian refugee arrived this morning from Lesvos with the support of UNHCR.
“I remember Nesrin very well”, Laila says, “I miss her too much. All I want is to see her again.” Although Laila, who fled violence in Kobani, has trouble with her memory, she remembers very vividly Nesrin, her 32-year-old granddaughter who now lives in Germany.
After arriving on Lesvos, due to her vulnerable condition Laila and her family were referred to a rented apartment run by UNHCR’s partner Iliaktida, while in Athens they are accommodated in a SolidarityNow apartment within ESTIA programme, funded by European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid. Now in Athens, with her son his wife, their children and grandchildren, she hopes to be able to see all the family reunited soon.
